Grades 1 - 8

Carole BennighofCarole Bennighof graduated from Birmingham Southern College with a B.A. in Music. Ms. Bennighof has taught piano for 20 years, and taught Music at AWS from 2010–2013. She was a Kindergarten teacher for 8 years, and began her journey as a Grades teacher with her own class of 1st graders in 2014. She will teach a combined 2nd/3rd Grade class for the 2016-17 school year. She began her Waldorf Grades Certification in 2014 at Rudolf Steiner College in Fair Oaks, California. Ms. Bennighof is the mother of three AWS alumni, currently at Shades Valley High School's Visual Art School, Engineering Academy, and Business & Finance Academy.

Crystal GibbCrystal Gibb joined AWS in 2011 as a substitute teacher and Extended Care teacher. She quickly fell in love with the curriculum, finished her degree at UAB in Linguistics and Italian Studies, and was hired to be the 1st Grade teacher in 2012. Ms. Gibb completed her Waldorf teaching certification training at Rudolf Steiner College in 2014. She will teach a combined 4th/5th Grade class for the 2016-17 school year.




Luke LucasLewis "Luke" Lucas
 joined AWS in 2000, and has worked in the Nursery, Extended Care, and Summer Programs, and as an Elementary Music Teacher and Class teacher. He holds a B.A. in Music Performance, and has received Waldorf training for Music. A certified Waldorf Grade Teacher, he currently teaches 6th grade and serves as the Chair of the College of Teachers, which represents the pedagogical leadership of the school.




Jodie BradleyJodie Bradley
 has served on the AWS faculty formerly as an Early Childhood Teacher (2002-2005), a Therapeutic Classroom teacher (2010), and as a Grades teacher since 2012. She has completed two years of Foundation Studies, plus Early Childhood training, as well as "Teaching Sensible Science" training for Middle School. Ms. Bradley was a member of the Faculty Coordinating Committee (which preceded today's College of Teachers) from 2003–2005. This year, she will serve as Grades Team Lead. She is excited about continuing with her students, teaching a combined 7th/8th grade class for the 2016-17 school year. She has two children; her son is an AWS alumn and her daughter is currently enrolled in the 3rd Grade.

Michelle LucasMichelle Fievet Lucas, a class teacher in our Grades Program, holds a Bachelors Degree in Social Work from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She has been at Alabama Waldorf School since 2002. She worked as a Nursery teacher for four years, and a Kindergarten teacher for two years. She completed her Waldorf Grades Certification training at Rudolf Steiner College in 2012. She has formerly served on the College of Teachers, and has acted as faculty representative to the Board of Trustees. She is the mother of two boys, both AWS alumni. Michelle completed a full Grades cycle with her 8th Graders' graduation in 2016, and is beginning again with a new 1st Grade class for the 2016-17 school year.

Lynda PhillipsLynda Powell holds a B.S. in Psychology and an M.S. in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Certification. She completed her Waldorf Grades Certification at Rudolf Steiner College in 2009. She has taught at Alabama Waldorf School since 1994, after more than a decade of teaching in public and other private schools. She served as kindergarten teacher for ten years, as Reading Support instructor for three years, and enjoyed looping up with her first class of students through the Grades until they graduated in 2014. She is the proud mother of twin graduates from Birmingham Southern College and a daughter, who is an instructor at Jefferson State Community College. Ms. Powell enjoys music, art, gardening, learning, and her grandchildren. She is member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary organization for outstanding educators. Ms. Powell taught 8th grade for the 2014-15 school year, and now serves as Chair of Care Group. She has also been contracted by the College of Teachers to perform teacher evaluations.
